• Question: Have you ever had any other jobs not science related?

      No, I’ve been lucky to have a job in science since I left the university. The rule of thumb, in my field at least, is that competition among researchers is so intense to make the return to science extremely difficult once you quit. A different reality is in those scientific/technological sectors where science blends with industry and a comeback is possible.

      Yes, two jobs! I taught in an English middle school. Ok, it was teaching science! But really the most important thing was the teaching. I also worked for a while in a tiny company in Lancashire developing, among other things, electronics and firmware for disco lights and firmware for digital signal processing.

      I used to work as a climbing instructor during my summer holidays from the age of 16 to 22. It was a great summer job to have as I also got to man the zip-wire, which involved sitting at the top of a tree for all day (although this wasn’t so fun when it was raining). My job also involved being a group leader for 5-year-old children – we would do lots of fun activities like swimming, art, drama, dance, football, etc. I also did some volunteering at a local nursery for a few months during school and helped out in GCSE maths classes as a teaching assistant when I was doing my A-Levels.

      Yes, unfortunately. I have worked doing research and development in the industry and as a software engineer, why I didn’t like. I suppose the lesson here is that, if you hang on and try to steer the boat in the right direction, you might eventually get there. 🙂

      Yes! Before my science jobs, I had a job working in a clothing store. It was a super different experience, but one that also taught me a lot about respect&kindness 🙂
