I’ve done a lot of work with the UoM physics outreach group over the last few years and I think that what they do is really important. They work with schools all over Manchester (and beyond) to bring fun science workshops to students that might not normally think that science is for them or that they are good at it. We try to work with under-privileged schools where the amount of students going on to further study is not very high. Our aim is just to show that science is for everyone, no matter what your background 🙂

One of my favourite workshops that they do is to talk to young women about science subjects. Girls are often taught at an early age that science is more for boys and that they would not be very good at it which is so so wrong! We are not trying to say that everyone should study science (everyone is different), just that everyone should consider that all options are open to them!
