Animal abuse is a horrible thing and why anyone would want to harm an animal is beyond me. I understand that this might be seen as hypocritical when I sometimes eat meat and for this reason (plus environmental reasons), I am trying to cut meat out from my diet. We had another question the other day about animal testing which I think is a bit more complicated. I don’t think we should test on animals for non-essential items like cosmetics but I think that it is sometimes necessary to test on animals for medicines. If animal testing is necessary in these cases, I think it should be done in the most humane way possible and there are lots of procedures in place in science to make sure that this is true.
Animal abuse is an abomination. But, I must confess, I eat animals, which as Savannah noted seems a tad off. My younger daughter would argue that killing an animal is the ultimate abuse. My counter argument is that killing, alas, is natural. As you tuck into your favourite animal be it chicken, pig, or cow, please pause and reflect of the agony inflicted every second of every day on our fellow creatures as they are eaten alive by other animals. At least, for the most part, we don’t eat animals alive any more! These days in most Western countries we try to kill animals as painlessly as possible before we eat them. What horrifies and utterly disgusts me is the way we mistreat animals before we kill them for food. If it were up to my younger daughter (a 27-year old lawyer) she would take Homo sapiens to the World Court for our mistreatment of our fellow creatures!
