• Question: What can we do to fix climate change??? (p.s. i am really serious about climate change and think we can save our planet if we try hard enough)

      This is an absolutely fantastic question to be asking. Climate change is an increasingly worrying issue that has already, and will continue to, cause a devastating extinction of many, many species. Someday that species could be homo sapiens. Right now, I think some realistic actions you can take include starting an environment club at your school where you can teach your friends and teachers about why climate change is something we need to talk about. You can also make sure that in your day to day life, you adopt a “green” way of living. For example, reusing water bottles and containers, minimizing plastic waste, reducing water and electricity usage, walking or biking instead of taking a car, reducing meat consumption etc.

      I think that even by asking this question, you’ve taken a great first step.

      Climate change has a big effect all over the world. I’m no expert, but one cause is the big amount of carbon dioxide released in the atmosphere by combustion, from cars to power plants. I think that a global solution can solve a global problem. A new path can only be led by large national and international organisations, especially in the countries that contribute the most.

    If you encounter a skeptical grownup, convince her or him with rational arguments that the climate is changing. Remind skeptics that the Earth’s climate has gone through enormous changes over its history. Climate change is a natural phenomenon. The point, however, is the rapidity of the current changes. Even when skeptics agree that the climate is changing, many disagree that this has anything to do we humans and, therefore, there is no need to change our way of life. Unfortunately, for skeptics, there is no evidence, none whatsoever, that natural changes in climate of the magnitude that we’re measuring can occur on the timescale of the Industrial Revolution through to the present day. There is overwhelming evidence that the rapidity of the changes are due to human activity. Rapid climate change, therefore, becomes a moral issue. Ask the grownups if they think it is morally defensible to force you and the children you may have one day to live in a world of super storms, submerged coastal cities, expanded deserts, migration of hundreds of millions of desperate people who will overwhelm the cities of Europe and North America and cause great political upheaval and even war. This planet does not need to be saved. It will recover from our folly. The problem is that we may not. I want my 22-month old grandson to grow up to live in beautiful, bountiful, pristine Earth. We owe it to him and the hundreds of millions of others and your generation to make sure that’s the future that unfolds, not the nightmarish one of super storms and political strife. My advice is if you can’t convince then at least when you talk to grownups about climate change, talk about everyday, practical, solutions that could make a difference.
