So there is no easy answer as there are a lot of different factors that people take into account when deciding whether or not to offer you a job! I will try to outline the main things you need to end up doing a PhD in science like me! A PhD can then lead into a job in research or in industry 🙂

In your GCSEs, you need to have good grades in maths and science at least. Most people who are interested in science will do all three sciences at GCSE (physics, chemistry and biology). A lot of schools will want you to get a GCSE level 5 or 6 or above in the subjects that you would like to study at A-Level (but this isn’t always the case). You also need to show that you are a good all-rounder – this normally means you need a level 4 or higher in English as well. This is because you need to be good at communicating as a scientist, otherwise you will never be able to tell people about all the amazing work you do!

In your A-Levels, you will need to choose the science that you want to do and you will almost always need to do A-Level maths too. Maths is super important in all science. The grades that you need will depend on which university you would like to go to – all universities are different and will tell you the grades that they want you to get to let you onto the course you have chosen.

In general, your GCSEs will last for 2-3 years, A-Levels for 2 years, and most degrees at university are 3-4 years long.

I did all three sciences at GCSE but only did physics at A-Level. I then went on to study physics at university for 4 years and have been working in my physics job for the last 9 months, studying particle physics!
